Wrecord Monkey Jewelry

Wrecord Monkey Jewelry

Do you have a stack of old vinyl records in your basement collecting dust? Well, a Brooklyn based design company called Wrecords By Monkey found a stylish way to recycle those great memories. Founders, Patrick Chirico and Brian Farrell, carved out a niche in the accessories business by handcrafting bracelets, pendants, rings and earrings made from old vinyl records. First they screen print the original graphic over the record. Then cut and shape it into the design. All while helping to leave a low carbon footprint.

What is really cool is that on many of the cuff bracelets, depending on the graphic you pick, you can still see the grooves of the records! There are so many different prints to choose from. You are sure to find one that fits your unique lifestyle. With several themes such as Off The Train (The images range from trains and cityscapes to dripping graffiti and spilling fire hydrants. The collection was inspired by New York City’s J-train,), and NYC Artist Series, which featured 12 NYC artists. All of their accessories are inspired by fashion, art, and music. They even have a new glow in the dark series! So what are you waiting for? Donate your old vinyl today for a truly personalized piece or just buy one and rock out with your cuff out! Check them out at www.WrecordsByMonkey.com. You can also find them at the Brooklyn Flea Market.

Keep Your Handbag Looking Like New

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

It’s amazing how the handbag has gone from being an afterthought accessory to a highly important part of a woman’s wardrobe. Luxury handbags have waiting lists now, and some handbag lovers will do anything to get their hands on the latest “IT” bag.

We all love our handbags and, depending on how much money you spend, they can become a real investment. Designer vintage handbags in great condition can fetch top dollar at vintage stores and trade shows. So, even though we know you cherish your new designer handbag it is in your best interest to keep it looking like new so that later on you have the option to resell it. That is why it is important to care for your bag properly to ensure that it has a long life. Periodic cleaning and correct storage will keep your bag looking like new. Here are some tips on how to extend the life of your handbag:

Prevention

1. If your handbag does not have “feet” on the bottom, you can have them added by a leather-care expert. Feet protect the bottom of the bag from scratches and dirt.

2. Try to avoid setting your bag down on the ground where it can get really dirty. You can purchase purse hooks that you can hang off the back of chairs that will hold your bag off the ground.

3. Keep makeup in a separate makeup bag as to prevent spills and powders  causing stains.

4. Be mindful to never put a pen in your bag without a cap. I don’t even like to use push pens as they can accidentally mark up the inside of your bag.

Storage

1. Handbags can be hung on a hook for a few days for storage, but any longer puts too much strain on the straps.

2. Ideally, handbags would be stored in cubbies built into your closet, but you can also store them in baskets or bins made of plastic-coated wire. Stand them upright or lay them down and don’t crowd them. They need to breathe, so don’t put a tight-fitting lid on.

3. When storing loose bags fill with balls of tissue paper to help keep the shape.

Structure Unfolded

construction-blog

In our last trend report we were focusing on the return of the true artist; designers going back to their roots as artist and incorporating painting and crafts into pieces of walking art. Now the second trend I like to call Structure Unfolded. This trend revolves around the construction details and tailoring techniques of the garments.

We are seeing the return of the 80’s construction, especially in jackets. Shoulder interest is going to be important. We have even seen the shoulder pad reappear, but in a slightly softer, more feminine way. Suits and jackets are focal points this season being worn with leggings. Also look for bolder, chunkier accessories. These are more statement pieces that really help finish off an otherwise boring outfit. Do you remember the power suits and androgynous styles of the 80’s? These are going to be great pieces to pick up at vintage shops and work into your wardrobe. Thierry Mugler was one of my favourite designers who was known for designing for very strong women and accentuated features in his garments such as bold shoulders, synched waists, and wide hips.

What is really happening here is that some designers are playing it a little bit safe during this recession. They are going back to the more tailored garments that they know are more saleable, but then they are adding a little twist to them. They are taking a seemingly simple silhouette and then punching it up with some great construction details. So you have the familiarity of the simple silhouette, the safety of good quality construction, and yet still manage to add a little style in there.
