french-connection

I was thumbing through my Life & Style magazine last week, and I turned the page to see a “Who Wore It Best” section where these two actresses were wearing this blue, galaxy style dress from French Connection. I was suddenly struck with this déjà vue feeling as if I had seen this dress before. Where could it be from? I was soon able to use my mental recall skills, and find the dress I had been thinking of on none other than the very chic online vintage website ShrimptonCouture.com. The original dress is from the 1970’s and was made by Anne Klein for the collection.

This shorter tank version by French Connection is very similar. We all know that designers sometimes use vintage to inspire them, but where do you draw the line? Well, for all who are interested the rule of thumb is this: a pattern or print must be altered in 7 points of difference. These changes can include but are not limited to color, size, shape, placement, material, etc. How many changes can you point out on this dress?

R.I.P. Alexander McQueen

mcqueen

The opening of London Fashion Week on Friday was darkened by the giant shadow cast by the suicide death of Alexander McQueen. His fans honored him with a remembrance wall that quickly became the center of attention in the fashion tent pitched in the courtyard of Somerset House. His final collection, finished by his assistants, is expected to be shown early next month in Paris.

Although his designs are not yet considered vintage, they are certainly collectible and will quickly become some of the most sought after pieces is history. McQueen was at the top of his class with his Savile Row tailoring and penchant for shock tactics which earned him the name ‘enfant terrible’ of the fashion world.

Born in the East End and the son of a taxi driver, McQueen started as an apprentice at in Savile Row at the age of 16, where he made suits for Prince Charles. He was famously first discovered as a designer in the 90s by Isabella Blow, the style guru and fashion director of Tatler. She bought all the clothes he made for his graduate show.

There was a stir when he was made head designer at Givenchy in 1996, succeeding John Galliano. He later joined forces with Gucci, who bought 51 per cent of his company. His hugely successful career brought him numerous awards, including British designer of the year four times between 1996 and 2003 and the International Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards. He received a CBE in 2003.  He also designed a very affordable collection for Target called, McQ Alexander McQueen for Target, which debuted last year.

Clements Ribeiro

Monday, January 25th, 2010

clementsribeiro_atualI have written about the design duo Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro before. They are the designers behind Clements Ribeiro who often use vintage and antique trimmings to create their very unusual design collections.

Inacio explains, “The projects are all about up-cycling. When Suzanne and I restarted our business we were painfully aware of the sheer amount of brands and products crowding the market and felt somehow uncomfortable bringing in more stuff. Hence our concentrated collections - stronger individual pieces on a smaller range - as well as our concept collections we call Projects. These are made out of unique pieces which come about through a thematic recycling of vintage materials combined with high end crafts. “

Now they are unveiling what they call Project Number 4, a five piece collection built around vintage scarves. The pieces (a dress, blouse, and skirt) are made from mismatched scarves from the 40s-80s. There are also two merino wool sweaters embroidered with silk scarf scraps.

There is a presentation called “scarf mania” running from Sunday January 24th – Wednesday January 27th at the Palais Royal. The pieces range from $650 for a top to $1800 for the dress. You can pick one up when it hits shelves in May at Barney’s New York and Blake in Chicago.

Vintage Tea Party on the Express

Friday, December 18th, 2009

*Dec 08 - 00:05*

Still feel a little sting from the NYC MTA fare hikes? Well, your metro card might get you more than you bargained for this season! Every Sunday this month you can take part in a costume party tea party aboard the Nastalgia Express!

A group of costume-clad commuters will be turning this subway ride into a soiree! Tour guides from Levys’ Unique New York will host a free, unsanctioned “Vintage Tea Party” on an antique subway train. Commuters are encouraged to come dressed in their vintage best to sip tea and dine on dainty cookies, and “everything else you’d expect from a late-19th century parlor-room drama,” according to organizers.

This is the second “Vintage Tea Party” (the first one took place in 2004). This event will take place on a NYC Transit 1930s train, with wicker seats and ceiling fans, on the V line every Sunday this month as a holiday treat for straphangers. If you’re interested in attending, bring your old-timey garb and $2.25 subway fare to the Second Avenue/Lower East Side station on any Sunday this month at 2:00 pm. Look for similarly vintage-clad party-goers waiting on the uptown platform. Participants will ride the “V” train (apparently, for vintage) to Queens and back. Revelers are encouraged to bring tea and snacks for sharing.

Audrey Hepburn Wedding Gown to be Passed On

Monday, December 7th, 2009

audreys-wedding-dress

This is a sweet story. As we mentioned in Friday’s blog “Audrey Goes to Auction, there is going to be an auction held by Kerry Taylor Auctions in London this Wednesday, December 8th which will include Audrey’s personal wardrobe.

One of the collections comes from Tanja Star Busmann who became friends with Audrey when she was a schoolgirl of 15 and Audrey was 21. It was 1951 and Audrey had moved to London to pursue her dream of becoming a ballerina. Tanja was probably Audrey’s first official fan and they remained lifelong friends. When Audrey had finished with her clothes she often passed them to Tanja and even asked Monsieur de Givenchy to leave larger seam allowances for this purpose. Boxes would arrive at Tanja’s door filled with to the brim with haute couture ball gowns, day suits and accessories. Tanja described this as their `fabulous tradition’.

One of the items (lot 333) up for bid is the ivory satin bridal gown designed for Audrey for her planned wedding to James Hanson in 1952 which never took place. It was designed by the Fontana sisters and Audrey went for fittings for the gown when she was filming Roman Holiday. It was Audrey’s wish that her dress should be “worn by another girl for her wedding, perhaps someone who couldn’t ever afford a dress like mine, the most beautiful poor Italian girl you can find”. It was given to Amabile Altobella who went on to have an extremely happy and long marriage. She has decided that it is time to pass it to another bride, rather than keep it stored in the box where it has remained for so many decades. This beautiful simply gown could be yours next!
