Resort Fashion

Monday, January 18th, 2010

resortfashion_coverAre you tired of the cold? Do you dream of hopping a charter boat to go island hopping and basking in the warm rays of the sun? You start to see all of the fashion designer’s “resort” collections hit the floors filled with bright colors, and nautical inspirations. Oh how nice it would be to take a vacation right now to get out of the chill!

What many people don’t realize is where the idea of “resort” came from. It all started back with the transportation age set in. The railway system was put into place here in the U.S. around 1830. This new mode of transportations got people moving. New hotels and spas, otherwise known as “resorts” sprung up along the railway around the country as people began moving and going in search of hot springs. People also began traveling overseas on steamers. Each mode of traveling exposed the people to new activities and more social events, and each situation called for certain behaviors and certain attire.

In the new book, Resort Fashion: Style in Sundrenched Climates the author, Caroline Rennolds Milbank explore this glorious time of travel and leisure and how the fashions changed over the years to what we know it as today. Find the meaning of use of certain colors and the introduction of wild prints. You will never look at vacationing the same way again!

Resort Fashion: Style in Sundrenched Climates is on book shelves now for $65 from Rizzoli publishing.

Louis Vuitton: Art, Fashion & Architecture

Friday, December 11th, 2009

lv-book-coverAll I knew of the House of Louis Vuitton was their super luxurious handbags and clothing line, their seductive ad campaigns with A-list actresses and musicians, and that Marc Jacobs was the Design Director responsible for the houses revamp over the past decade. What I didn’t know was the houses rich history of collaborating with artists and architects, or where the famous monogram design had originated.

A new book called Louis Vuitton: Art, Fashion & Architecture has just hit the book shelves to the delight of fashionistas everywhere. The book is not only beautifully illustrated with close to 400 pages of the houses most memorable ad campaigns and examples of the vast limited edition collections created with artistic collaborations, but it includes inserted essays on topics such as the history of the company, the architecture designed in stores from around the world, and what the company has done to combat counterfeiting.

After reading this book I have a greater respect for the houses ongoing commitment to artistic expression and collaboration with different types of artist from the modern architecture of its stores around the world, interior displays, limited edition collections, and exhibits of others artists. The house has a very open policy that allows the collaborating artist to morph the iconic logo into a new artistic vision proving that the brand is ever changing yet forever memorable. I loved reading about how the $45,000 infamous “Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork Bag” came to be. The Vanessa Beecroft exhibit of naked models which invaded the Louis Vuitton flagship store on the Champs-Elysees is another tantalizing example of the cross collaboration with artist that has helped shape the brand to what it is today.

This book is sure to quickly become the “IT” book of this holiday season! Anyone interested in the ties between art and fashion will find Louis Vuitton to be the best example of cross collaboration and modern expressionism. The book is retailing for $54.

NORMAN PARKINSON: A Very British Glamour, by Louise Baring, Rizzoli New York, 2009.

One cannot begin to talk about fashions’ ever changing history without recognizing the work of Norman Parkinson, a fashion photographer. Parkinson changed fashion photography history by shooting model is real environments and pioneering “action realism,” a style still used today. He began his career in the 1930’s, a time when most fashion photography was shot on a set with frozen poses. He took models out of the studio and into natural light and gave them movement.

Rebel, Rebel Anti-Style

Monday, September 7th, 2009

coverEverybody at some point in time in their life can relate to the desire of wanting to be cool and hip. Maybe it was back in grade school, or perhaps later in life when you sought independence and nonconformity.

Keanan Duffy is a British born self made punk musician turned fashion designer turned style consultant who names David Bowie and Avril Lavigne among his high profile clients. Growing up in the 70’s punk scene in Britain and later through the New York grunge 90’s Duffy experimented with his own style and can certainly testify to the ever-changing fashions in music.

Keanan has attempted to layout the ground rules for rebellious style in his recent book Rebel, Rebel Anti-Style. Is it really possible that there is a secret code to cool that anyone can harness? That effortless look that is almost impossible to mimic. As he unveils his formula with the help of historical references to styles icons of fashion over the past few decades such as Elvis Presley, James Dean, Sid Vicious, Gwen Stephanie, and many more you do start to see a bit of a pattern. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular piece of apparel that he feels are keep components to creating a complete style such as graphic T-shirts, denim in its many forms, hard core boots, and the untraditional dress shirt. Maybe it is possible to connect the dots and create ones’ own anti-style concoction.

The secret will be out September 8th when the book hits shelves. For added buzz there is a Sirius radio show scheduled for September 10th. Also catch Keanan playing with his band, Slinky Vagabond at John Varvatos’ Lower East Side store in early October.
